Music as a Marketing Tool

Music is marketed is many different ways and one the biggest ways that bands and artists and promote themselves is through posters. Even in passing (say while walking in New York City) millions of people every day see posters and ads for musicians whether they have a new album coming out or if they are going on tour. Even if the people who see these posters are not interested in the artist or the particular genre of music, the image from the poster is something they will remember in the future. If they see a picture of a band's new album artwork they may not purposefully make a mental note of it, but they will remember it if they were to see it again.

A newer way of using music as a marketing tool is for bands themselves to post their albums on torrent sites such as BitTorrent or Mininova. In this day and age, millions of people all over the world are downloading music illegally through torrent sites such as these. For a band to put up their own work onto one of these sites works really well because they can have people listen to their music for free resulting in (possibly) more records sold and more people coming to their shows.

Musicians and bands can also use music videos as a marketing tool. With sites such as YouTube and MySpace, even independent artists can post their music and use it as a promotion tool to get their name out there.
